Are you S.A.D?

If you found this page, you are most likely going through a rough time in your life. Look out your window. Do you see snow? Is it cloudier than normal? Where is the sun? Are the days getting shorter? And most importantly, are you experiencing symptoms of depression? You could be one of the 10 million Americans affected by Season Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression experienced commonly in the winter (more uncommon in the summer, but possible).

Although this depression is only temporary for a few months during the year, it can still take a serious toll on someone’s health. It’s important to know some ways of coping with SAD (that you can do while bundled in your sweatshirt and pants).

  1. Go outside! – During the peak time of light (wherever you live), go for a short walk or even sit outside and read a book.
  2. If natural light isn’t doing it for you, invest in a light box for your room.
  3. Sit near windows if your indoors.
  4. Get plenty of exercise.
  5. Eat healthy and balanced meals.
  6. Manage your stress.
  7. Talk therapy.
  8. If none of the above options are working for you, antidepressants can be prescribed from a doctor.

“It is our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.” -Aristotle
